For some cities, the actual season is the best of the year. For many Minnesota fans, the offseason is the best part of the year. More specifically, draft day. We often have a high draft pick and hope is building as draft day approaches. The 2012 NFL draft is no different. As the Vikings prepare to announce the 3rd pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the TC Huddle staff took a moment to look back at some of our favorite draft moments over the years.
Joe Buri: Adrian Peterson and Troy Williamson
The thrill of victory…
and the agony of defeat…
Over the past decade, the Minnesota Vikings have had their fair share of both when it comes to the NFL draft. Will this year’s draft involve a thrill, ala the Vikings’ 7th overall pick in 2007…or agony, ala the Purple’s 7th overall pick in 2005?
Sean Ryan: David Palmer Pick #40 overall (2nd round) 1994 Draft
This was a guy everyone wanted because of the excitement factor. (Yes, even the grainy early 1990s video shows the speed and athleticism.) In fact, I remember people chanting his name on the radio when the Vikings made their second of back-to-back first round picks that year. (Dewayne Washington at #18 and Todd Steussie at #19. Not bad picks.)
But I just remember him sliding and sliding (ala Randy Moss), and the excitement grew. I can’t remember the name of the KFAN radio host who was anchoring the draft coverage – think Paul Allen, but with a little more crazy – and he got the entire crowd riled up chanting Da-vid Pal-mer (clap-clap-clapclapclap) Da-vid Pal-mer…
It was one of the few times I felt like we got “the fan’s pick.” And while Palmer never really turned out to be the electric boost the Vikings needed, (shows what us fans know), it was fun, for a minute, to get “our guy.”
Steven Shega: Christian Ponder – Minnesota Vikings #12 Draft Pick
I love this video because it talks about Christian Ponder before the Viking drafted him, shows clips of him before being drafted, and features post-draft analysis. Like most rookies, he had an up and down rookie season, but showed flashes of how good he can become. Ponder has all the physical traits to be the Vikings starting QB for a long time, and his intelligence is plainly seen. So go ahead and check out the video, but be warned: You may become exuberantly excited for the upcoming season.
Lindsey Young: Percy Harvin, No. 22 Draft Pick
Dan Buri: Randy Moss
When the Vikings drafted The Freak in 1998, no one could deny his athleticism. No one could deny the issues he brought with him either. Certainly no one could have predicted the career he has had. Moss nearly helped us back to the Super Bowl, multiple times. But it wasn’t meant to be. Now all we’re left with is memories. The good and the bad. This video shows us the complete Moss package. Everything that he brings with him. The Vikings will probably never draft a more explosive play maker again, (apologies to Adrian Peterson).
