15 years ago today, Minnesota’s NHL organization chose the name that would forever be our hockey team. (That is, unless they up and leave us in the dead of the night again. God forbid.)
On January 22, 1998, Minnesotans were looking at six potential nicknames for their new hockey team. In addition to the Wild, the team was reviewing the following other fives names and uniforms for our hometown hockey team:
1. Blue Ox
2. Northern Lights
3. Voyageurs

Voyageurs were the working-class employees of fur trading companies in the Minnesota region during the 1700s.
4. White Bears
5. Freeze
On this day in ’98, the organization ignored an estimated 13,000 suggested names and sifted through these other five primary options to settle on the Minnesota Wild. Thank goodness it did. That White Bears logo is boring and those Northern Lights uniforms are hideous.
