Return of the Rookies–Breaking Down the 2013 Minnesota Swarm

Editor’s Note: Maria Jollie is a guest writer to TC Huddle. She previously worked for the Minnesota Swarm writing articles, press releases and live blogging on game day for the organization. TCH is excited to have her break down the Swarm’s prospects in this 2013 season. Last year the Minnesota Swarm shocked the lacrosse world by advancing to the National Lacrosse League (NLL) West Division Finals with an unlikely team of rookies. The Swarm, who comprised the league’s youngest roster with an average age of 25.2, beat the odds by defeating Colorado 14-10 in the first round of playoffs....

15th Anniversary of Choosing “Wild” Name

15 years ago today, Minnesota’s NHL organization chose the name that would forever be our hockey team. (That is, unless they up and leave us in the dead of the night again. God forbid.) On January 22, 1998, Minnesotans were looking at six potential nicknames for their new hockey team. In addition to the Wild, the team was reviewing the following other fives names and uniforms for our hometown hockey team:   1. Blue Ox   2. Northern Lights 3. Voyageurs Voyageurs were the working-class employees of fur trading companies in the Minnesota region during the...

Dunking with Rodney Williams- Episode 2

Rodney Williams has surpassed 1,000 points this season. He needs 25 rebounds to reach 500 on his career, 28 assists to reach 200 and 27 more blocks to reach 150. He is close to joining Kevin Lynch and Sam Jacobsen as the only players in Gophers history to score 1,000 points, grab 500 rebounds and tally 200 assists. Incredible. What he’s most known for, however, is his high-flying act. Episode 2 of Dunking with Rodney Williams opens up with his 360 dunk again North Dakota State, which was featured the next day on Pardon the Interruption (and...

Barry Melrose Picks Minnesota Wild to Win Stanley Cup

We’re two games into an undefeated season and the excitement is circulating the state of Minnesota. There will be plenty of ups and downs in this strike-shortened season, but Wild fans are excited to be back in action, not to mention back in the national discussion. Last week we ESPN mega-hockey analyst Barry Melrose picked the Wild to win the Western Conference. Now, with the season underway, Melrose is taking his prediction one step further. He is picking Minnesota to win the Stanley Cup. That’s right Minnesota fans, Melrose is on our bandwagon to win the whole shebang. While...

Where Do the Gophers Go from Here?

The Minnesota Gophers are coming off of back-to-back losses to two Top 10 teams. Both the loss to Indiana and the loss to Michigan threatened to be blowouts early in the second half, but the boys that have no quit in their fight made both games interesting down the stretch. So where do we stand? Is this a team that played poorly for 25-30 minutes in both games and showed major holes, particularly on the offensive end and in their bench? Or is this a team that shouldn’t have won at Indiana (Wisconsin did) or against Michigan at home...

Greg Steisema Is Making an Impact

Second-year center Greg Stiemsma definitely stays under the radar of most NBA enthusiasts. He averages only 11 minutes per game, and he isn’t what you would call a big scorer. Regardless, Stiemsma proves an asset to the Minnesota Timberwolves. While he only averages 2.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, stat checkers should also take into account the context under which the Wisconsin alum is playing. The 27-year-old finds himself behind big man Nikola Pekovic on the Wolves’ depth chart, and notably so. Pek is a machine on the court, averaging 16 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He...
