Minnesota has a championship. But does it count?

This past Saturday, the state of Minnesota–“State of Hockey”–brought home a National Title. The University of Minnesota won the Frozen Four at Xcel Energy Center to be crowned champs. Duluth, that is. I’m struggling with whether or not this championship really “counts” for the typical Minnesota fan. I mean, can we put this up as a banner in the figurative “Minnesota Championship” rafters? Consider: For the majority of folks in the Twin Cities metro, getting to Wisconsin is a quicker trip than up “nord” to the shores of Lake Superior. Most Minnesota sports fans lose interest in hockey once...

Twins- Time to Worry or Early Slump

The Twins have now played three series and have yet to split a win one, let alone split a series. We are 3-6 and sitting in last place in the division. Everyone wants to stay calm, but if you’re honest with yourself, you’re worrying a little. We all are. Only the most bi-polar of Twins fans are panicking, but even the keeled and cynical Patrick Reusse has lingering doubts about this team. It’s still very early, but the doubts are there. Much the same way the doubt is creeping into the players heads as they continue to struggle at...

Stadium Bill is Here, McNabb may be next

The Vikings stadium bill will be submitted today. The bill is rumored to not specify a location for the stadium, but instead to propose three different sites: the former Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant, the current location of the Metrodome, and a spot near Target Field. The bill will, however, lay out a process for how to pick a location for the stadium in early 2012. Yes, you read that correct. That would mean we would not even break ground on a stadium for another year, let alone have a new home for the Purple and Gold. The proposed...

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb

My husband is from the Pacific Northwest, and when I first moved back to Minnesota from the west coast, bringing him with me, it was mid-June. Although the weather was at its Minnesota finest, he quickly got a crash course in Minnesota summers, realizing two things he truly hated about those summers: mosquitoes and humidity. On the former, my husband (who would love to spend his days doing scientific experiments, or at the very least, reading about the scientific experiments of others) claims that humans 1) either have blood that mosquitoes are drawn to or have no interest in,...

Wolves Have Worst Record in NBA

Don’t look now, but the Minnesota Timberwolves are the worst team in the NBA. That’s right. The worst record in the NBA doesn’t belong to the Cleveland Cavaliers. It doesn’t belong to the Sacramento Kings. And it certainly doesn’t belong to the Toronto Raptors. No, our Wolves now sit alone in the basement of the entire NBA. Outside of Kevin Love’s Double-Double Streak, the most interesting thing that has happened to this team in awhile is a law suit filed by NBA referee Bill Spooner against an AP writer and his tweet during a Wolves game. The comforting part,...

Colton Iverson Makes Five Players Gone

Minnesota Golden Gophers’ men’s basketball team lost center Colton Iverson this week due to defection. Iverson is the latest in an epidemic of defecting players in the last year: Royce White, Paul Carter, Justin Cobbs and Devoe Joseph. Everyone has been tight-lipped about Colton Iverson leaving Minnesota so far. The Gophers initially asked Iverson to reconsider his decision when he first asked for a release from his scholarship for his senior year. When he asked a second time, the Gophers granted his request with the stipulations that he cannot transfer to any Big Ten school or any team that...
